If you suffer from either migraine headaches or excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) then Botulinum Toxin can provide the answer. At iDental we offer safe and effective treatment for both of these conditions at our practice in Shepherd’s Bush.
Botox® is a brand name for Botulinum Toxin, a neurotoxic protein that temporarily paralyses specific muscles when injected into the body. As well as being widely used as a cosmetic treatment, Botox® can also be used to successfully treat migraine headaches or excessive sweating due to its nerve-blocking properties.
Migraines are very common and can be extremely unpleasant. They can take different forms but typically present as a severe, throbbing headache on one side of the head. Other symptoms include nausea and vomiting, as well as a sensitivity to loud noises and bright lights.
Botox® has been proven to successfully provide relief from chronic migraine headaches by reducing the amount of chemicals released by the nerve endings that carry pain signals to the brain. On the first visit, several injections are made into the muscles around the head and neck. The treatment can then be repeated every twelve weeks. The treatment doesn’t work for everyone though the majority of those treated experience a significant improvement in quality of life as a result of the treatment.
Hyperhidrosis, more commonly known as excessive sweating, can be an embarrassing and debilitating problem. Sweating itself is natural and an important function to regulate the temperature of the body. However, in some cases, the body produces excessive sweat beyond what is considered normal. This can occur without a specific cause, though it can be linked with low blood sugar levels, pregnancy or taking some medications.
Botulinum toxin can provide effective, temporary relief from the condition by blocking the chemical in the body that stimulates the sweat glands, thus reducing sweating. The procedure is straightforward and consists of multiple, small injections made a few centimetres apart in the underarm (or other specified) area. The symptoms generally start to improve after one to two weeks. The effects can then last from anything between three and twelve months and the procedure can be repeated any time after four months.
The costs depend on the individual case and the amount of injections required to successfully treat or control the condition. Guide prices can be found on our Fees Page.
